Focus Shifting
Attention is something within our control. At least sometimes and at least to a degree.
A part of the state in the present moment is Degree of identification with the mind. This is the degree to which we are lost in our thoughts, the degree to which we are identified with our mind. This is the degree to which we are not present.
Another way to put it is how close thoughts that are arising to us. How much space there is around each thought.
The more space there is around each thought, the more choice we have in whether to buy into the thought or not.
Another way to put it. Our attention is a limited resource. There's only so much of it. Its capacity is limited. The more capacity is used up by thoughts, the less is available for everything else.
The more capacity is used up by thoughts, the more power they have. More intensity. More believeablity.
The less capacity there is for us to face experience, face present moment.
Focus Shifting is an act of volunterily modulating your attention away from thoughts into any other object in Awareness.
What that does is it reduces the amount of attention used by thoughts, thus making them weaker. Thus leading to regaining our capacity for facing the present moment.
The degree to which a person is able to stay in the present moment varies. It can have different depths, different lengths, it depends on the state of the system in the moment. And the state of the system depends on the shape of the system. And the shape of the system depends on many things: trauma, past experiences, culture, intellect, amount of work done, etc.
It goes like this:
- Look around yourself.
- Shift your attention into your sensory perception. Either one of them or all at once. You will have to play around with it to find what works for you best.
There are different variations of Focus Shifting:
- Tapping
- Tracking
- Tracing
- Colors
- Box
Notice the body immediately afterwards. Drop into the body. Allow yourself to drop into the body. Become aware of it. Relax into it. Relax into the sensations whatever they are.
And stay there.
Practice being fine with being in your body.

Resistance
Resistance is not a tool and doesnt belong here.
Yet it has to be defined.
What is resistance?
It's something that can be measured. It's something solid. Something tangible.
The more resistance there is, the more suffering there is.
The less resistance there is, the less suffering there is.
Resistance has an object. I resist something.
But nothing exists. So I resist a thought.
A thought causes resistance.
I can resist a sensation.
I can resist an emotion.
I can resist energy. In whatever form it takes.
Resistance has everything to do with attention.
Resistance is connected with fear.
